CITY, BLUES TIE 24-24
KCRFC played its first league match for the 2009-2010 season Saturday, October 3 against the Kansas City Blues. It was a perfect fall day and a good number of City alumni and supporters turned out for the 2:45pm kickoff at Mid-America Sports Complex in Lenexa, KS.
Matches between City and "that other Kansas City team" historically are very competitive. Saturday was no different. Coming off last spring's 2-point loss to a stacked Blues side, City had a score to settle. It was clear early-on that this would be a hard-hitting match.
City jumped out to an early 10-0 lead scoring 13 and 22 minutes into the match and again at 36 minutes. The Blues responded but trailed at the half 14-17. The final 40 minutes saw two early trys by the Blues at 50:00 and 65:00 as they took the lead 24-17.
City rose to the challenge, driving repeatedly into Blues' territory.
With the final try of the match at 71:00, City tied it up at 24-24.
Lock Nick Welchert made the first try of the match for City. 8-man Mike Haase, while battling the flu all game, led the scoring with 3 more tries. Scrumhalf and kicker Brandon Naghshineh went 2 for 4 on conversions, including a key game tying kick on the final try.
Falling short of a decisive win, City played very well for what was the first real test of the 09-10 season. Look for a strong finish to the fall season as City continues to move forward.
The next match is against KU on October 17th at Mid-America Sports Complex at 1pm
Practice will continue at Gillham Park (39th St. & Gillham Rd) Tuesday and Thursday 6pm |
